PHILADELPHIA -- An autopsy was conducted Sunday
on the Boston College rower who died after collapsing
at the Dad Vail Regatta, but results were not immediately
released.
Jeff Moran, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Medical
Examiner's Office, said there would be no announcement
Sunday following the autopsy on Scott Laio, who collapsed
Saturday after his crew won the men's lightweight
eight. A spokesman for Boston College said Saturday
that the junior from Pittsford, N.Y., apparently suffered
a heart attack.
Crew "was clearly his passion," Boston
College spokesman Jack Dunn told Laio's hometown newspaper,
the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
At Pittsford Mendon High School, Laio was consistently
on the honor roll. He developed his love for rowing
as a member of the Pittsford Crew, a local nonprofit
rowing club for high school students.
"He was a great, great kid," said Barb
Kindig, a Pittsford Crew coach. "He was really
just a very committed rower."
The Pittsford Crew team learned of Laio's death Saturday
as it competed in the state scholastic rowing championships
in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
"We will say a prayer for him today, I'm sure,"
Kindig said.
Laio participated in a local Learn to Row program
when he was 14 years old and returned as a teacher
in the summer program two years ago. In a Democrat
and Chronicle interview that summer, he described
how he enjoyed watching children learn the rigorous
nuances of the sport.
"I love working with the kids and watching their
learning process," Laio said. "I can almost
see the little light bulbs going off above their heads
as they understand what to do." |
